IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard Wetherell
Twigg, Jr.
October 23, 1939 – November 22, 2024
Richard W. Twigg, Jr., of Norwell, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 22, 2024, at the age of 85. Born in Quincy, MA, Dick was the son of Stella (Fitzgerald) and Richard Wetherell Twigg.
Dick grew up in Scituate, MA and moved with his family to Pennsylvania where he graduated from Bethel Park High School. He joined the U.S. Navy out of high school and served as a Naval Corpsman in Philadelphia. Upon discharge, he returned to live in his family home on Third Cliff in Scituate and graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Dick was first employed as a Nuclear Project Engineer at General Dynamics in Quincy. When his division moved to Groton, CT, he was hired at Stone & Webster in Boston as Lead Engineer Technical Audits in their Nuclear Power Plant Engineering Assurance Division. Most recently, he retired after 20 years as Quality Assurance Manager from The Protectowire Company, headquartered in Pembroke.
Dick married Martha (Blanchard) in Scituate in 1974 and they moved to their home in Norwell in 1976 where they raised their two children. Besides his family, sailing was his greatest passion. He spent his summers sailing out of Scituate Harbor where he was a member of the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, serving as Race Committee Chairman for several years. He loved nothing more than day-sailing out of Scituate or cruising Buzzards Bay, Cuttyhunk and the islands, or Downeast Maine with his family and friends on their sailboat "Spring Tide".
Dick was very active in his Scituate community as a member of the Scituate Jaycees, an assistant troop leader with Boy Scout Troop 90, and a member of the Scituate Conservation Commission. After moving to Norwell, he served for 16 years on the Town of Norwell Planning Board, and was a member of the Groundwater Protection Committee, as well as the Transportation Enhancement Committee. Dick was an ardent conservationist and was most proud of the Donovan Property purchase in Norwell and the open space protection it provided. He was the President of the Church Hillers; and was also a Norwell youth soccer coach, flying home from business trips to be at all the games.
Later in life, he enjoyed photographing birds, particularly shore birds off the coast of Massachusetts and Maine and especially with his family and grandchildren in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State.
In addition to frequently visiting family in the San Juan Islands, Dick and Martha enjoyed travels to Great Britain, the South Carolina and Georgia Islands, and especially their nature photography adventure to Prince William Sound, Alaska.
Dick is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Martha (Blanchard) Twigg, his daughter Meredith Twigg of Boston, his son Richard ("Todd") Twigg III and his wife Kristin of Lopez Island, WA, and two cherished granddaughters, Matilda and Cleo Twigg. He is also survived by his sister Joanne Knowlson of Venetia, PA, brother Daniel Twigg of Marshfield, MA, brother in-law Jim Blanchard and his wife, Terry Sweeney of El Granada, CA.
Dick will be remembered for his kind smile, love of the outdoors and gardening, determination, his endearing "dad jokes", and his presence and enthusiastic support of his children and their sports teams. He was a devoted and much-loved husband, father and grandfather. We are blessed to have had him in our lives and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.
