Obituary

Robert Lawrence Barry, a longtime resident of Brewster and Yarmouth Port, passed away peacefully at Queen Anne Nursing Home, Hingham, on December 7, 2015. Born August 2, 1929, in Chelsea, MA, Robert grew up in Quincy and graduated from Quincy High School in 1947. He spent three years serving in the US Army and was stationed in Okinawa. After discharge, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. and then obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University, where he studied under Rico LeBrun, Herbert Matter, Joseph Albers, and Paul Rand. An artist his entire life, Robert was a traditionalist in both technique and approach; he stated, "I am concerned with the effects of light and shadow, and endeavor to combine these with a particular mood and quality of atmosphere—all rendered with meticulous brushwork." His paintings have been exhibited at the Cove Gallery, Ogunquit, ME; Ocean Edge, Brewster; The Boston Athenaeum, Boston; and the Lillian Heidenberg Gallery in New York City.

Mr. Barry's paintings can also be found in the permanent collection of the Boston Athenaeum, as well as private collections in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and internationally in Paris, Toronto, and Calgary. He also worked as Art Director for a major publishing house and was Co-Owner of Mark Lawrence Fine Antiques in Brewster, MA.

His brother, Attorney Richard P. Barry of Norwell, survives Robert.

A funeral mass for Robert will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at Our Lady of the Cape Catholic Church, 468 Stony Brook Rd., Brewster. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Robert may be made to Cape Cod Museum of Art, Dennis.
