Robert E. Riley

Robert E. Riley passed away peacefully at his home in Cohasset, Massachusetts on September 5, 2026, at age 96, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Riley was born on February 19, 1930 in Boston, the son of Edward G. Riley, a gregarious salesman, political advisor to former Massachusetts Governor Charles Hurley and founder of a wholesale meat company, and Nina Riley, a former “Miss Boston,” and contestant in the 1925 Miss America Pageant.

In his early years, he lived in several homes on the South Shore, the majority in Quincy, with many summers spent in Hull at a beach cottage originally purchased by his grandfather in 1919. Mr. Riley made Cohasset his permanent home in 1976 with the purchase of a home overlooking the ocean, one of the houses he had dreamed of owning as a teenager while rowing out to pull his lobster traps for one of many summer jobs.

He was a proud graduate of Boston College High School, Class of 1947, and the College of the Holy Cross in 1951, where he graduated magna cum laude. He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1953 before graduating from Navy Officer Candidate School. Mr. Riley served honorably in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship USS Iowa and the destroyer escort USS Amick, and later as a disbursing officer of the Portsmouth Naval Prison in New Hampshire, where he liked to say he was one of the few who could go home after work. After his active duty, he spent seven years in the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1962 as a Lieutenant Commander. In 2018, he was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Navy Supply Corps Foundation.

Mr. Riley began his professional career as an investment analyst for Putnam Investments. Despite having no prior background in investment management, he ultimately rose to become Vice Chairman and CEO of the company, a role he held for nine years, and was one of the first Irish Catholics appointed to the leadership of a Boston investment management business. After his time at Putnam, he served as a Senior Vice President for American Express, Executive Vice President of Prudential Financial, President and Chief Operating Officer of Dreyfus Corporation, President of Leggatt McCall Properties, and President of Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises, the family office of the Kennedy family, where he developed enduring friendships with the late Senator Ted Kennedy and many other members of the Kennedy family.

As part of his “retirement,” Mr. Riley served as a Director and Chairman of the Investment Committee of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, a member of the investment committees of the College of the Holy Cross, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston College High School, Chairman of the investment committee of the Cohasset Library Trust, vocal soloist and cantor at Our Lady of Victories Church in Boston, participant in more than 20 Falmouth Road Races and captain of his boat, Five Sons IV. He also authored his award-winning autobiography, Piercing the Irish Ceiling.

Despite all of his career achievements, Mr. Riley’s greatest pride and joy came from his family and his love and devotion to family will be his most enduring legacy. He is survived by his wife, Carol Anthony Riley, who stood by his side for 52 years, his five sons: Robert E. Riley, Jr., David Riley, Thomas Riley MD, Michael Riley and Brian Riley, his stepdaughter, Katie Bissinger, his sister, Nancy Downey, his brothers, Kevin Riley and Edward Riley, Jr., nine granddaughters, three grandsons, three great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who will mourn his passing and remember him always. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Ann McCourt.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 11, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA. A Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, September 12, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 2 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA, followed by a graveside ceremony at Woodside Cemetery in Cohasset.
