Roger Edward Hughes, age 92, of Cataumet, formerly of Charlestown, passed peacefully on July 31, 2013 surrounded by his family.
Roger was the son of the late Myra and John R. Hughes of Charlestown and was the husband of the late Mariesther Fitzpatrick Hughes. He is the father of Roger E. Hughes, Jr. and his wife Connie, of Norwell, Joseph J. Hughes and his wife Sissy of Weston, Florida (formerly of Norwell), the late Maureen B. Hughes of Cataumet, and the late Thomas J. Hughes and his widow Cathy Cosgrove Hughes of Somerville. Roger is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Caroline Hughes Corbin and Allison Hughes Ryan of Norwell, Roger E. Hughes
During World War II, Roger was a Crew Chief on a B-17 Bomber which flew on eleven missions over Nazi Germany. His plane was shot down over Germany and he was held captive for 17 months in the Stalag 17B Prison Camp. Roger was an active member of Ex-POW organizations locally and nationally. He retired after 23 years as a court officer in the Suffolk Superior Court.
There will be calling hours at the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 30 Central Street (off Rt 123, near State Police Barracks) Norwell Center on Sunday, August 4, 2013 from 3-7 P.M. A funeral from the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, Norwell, Monday, August 5, 2013 at 8:00 A.M. followed by the Funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. in St. Helens Church, 383 Washington Street, Norwell. Interment to follow at the National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Mr. Hughes should be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
