Shirley B. Marten, formally of Nichols Road in Cohasset MA, passed away peacefully at Linden Ponds on June 18, 2022. She was ninety years old.
Born in Leeds, England on March 28, 1932, Shirley emigrated to the United States and lived in Cohasset for fifty years. She often said the natural seaside coast landscape of Cohasset reminded her of her British roots.
Shirley was an active community member in the Boston area; focusing her attentions on conservation, education, community building, and the commitment to helping others less fortunate.
In Cohasset, she worked at the Cohasset Consignment Shop, Cohasset Public Library, and Cohasset Historical Society. Along with other community members, she helped preserve, for future generations, the natural environment of James Island along Atlantic Avenue. She was an advocate of the Trustees of Reservation for many years.
In Boston, she was a board member and volunteered with the Center for International Visitors, Artists for Humanity, United Negro Fund, and the South Shore Hospital. She was most proud of her support of the New England Center for the Arts and Technology (NECAT), a non-profit group providing training in the culinary arts for low-income Boston residents.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 70 years: James F. Marten; her two children: Lewis H. Marten, and Kay S. Marten and their spouses, Lucinda Linde and Ronald Nunn; grandchildren: Ian A. Marten, Ryan L. Marten, Dylan M. Nunn, Alana M. Nunn. Her sister Cynthia, and a number of nieces and nephews who reside in Great Britain.
Shirley loved the ocean and walked daily along Sandy Beach. In summer, she swam the length of the beach almost every day.
Memorial service will be private.
