IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas E.
Atkinson, Sr.
November 28, 1932 – July 12, 2025
Thomas Edward Atkinson Sr. died peacefully at home, entering into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 12, 2025. At 92, Tom completed his race in the same manner that he lived each day — with dignity, grace, and faith.
Many knew him as a gentleman, veteran, businessman, and patriot, but above all else, Tom's legacy prevails as the patriarch of a large family that he loved unconditionally and led so fervently. His role as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather defined him more than any other accomplishment in his lifetime.
Born in Manassas, VA, in 1932, Tom spent his childhood in Cambridge and Newton, enjoying summers in Scituate. After graduating from Boston College in 1953, he proudly served in the U.S. Army until 1956, before spearheading his family business, Atkinson Shoe Corporation, for multiple decades. In 1959, Tom married his beloved wife and lifelong partner, Marian. They put down roots in Cohasset, MA, and saw their family blossom there over the next 45 years before settling in Scituate in 2004 to savor the rest of their days together.
A gentle father and family man through his last breath, Tom was never afraid to meet each child and grandchild on their level with a loving embrace. During boisterous summers at Sandy Beach, you could find him knee-deep in the sand building castles with all the kids (not just the seven that were his own). He was quick to construct Matchbox cities and play with firetrucks and trains, lying on the floor for hours. His lap was often full with one of his many grandchildren while maneuvering the John Deere around the yard. These tender moments and quiet reminders of Tom's servant leadership are what his family will cherish most as they work to honor his legacy for the rest of their days. They are forever grateful to the incredible team of caregivers who ensured their father received the same level of comfort and support in his final days that he was known for generously showering upon each member of his family.
Tom and Marian's greatest legacy and most important priority was always their seven children: Sarah McKeough (Paul), Peg Lee (Dick), Tom Atkinson Jr. (Janet), Nina Monty (Treg), John Atkinson, Maura Butler (Kevin), and Karen Witkowski (Jamie) — along with their beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
