Thomas W. Hernan, age 87, of Cohasset, passed away on January 4, 2013 after a brief illness. Tom was the beloved husband for 65 years of Margaret "Peggy" (Marks) and the devoted father of Kathleen Rhodes of Cohasset, Carol Berens and husband Michael of Weymouth, Thomas G. and wife Stephanie of Scituate, and Jack and wife Cindy of Scituate. He was the brother of Donald "Dutchy" Hernan of Cohasset and the late Robert and Betty Hernan. Mr. Hernan is also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Tom was a graduate of Cohasset High School, Class of 1943. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a US Navy Corpsman, attached with the 4 th US Marine Corps Division. He was assigned to the conflicts in the Pacific Theatre and took part in the invasions of Tinian, Siapan and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the conflict on Iwo Jima. Mr. Hernan worked for the Cohasset Fire Department for 34 years and retired as Deputy Chief. He was a member of the VFW Post and the American Legion George H. Mealy Post #118 in Cohasset.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 in St. Anthony Church, Cohasset at 10 am. Visiting hours Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013 from 3-7 pm in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset. Interment at the Beechwood Cemetery, Cohasset. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Mr. Hernan may be made to the George H. Mealy Post #118, PO BOX 118, Cohasset, MA. 02025.
