Virginia C. Mohr, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 in Plymouth, MA, where she had spent the last several years of her life. Daughter of Edmund J. Clifford and Alice (Grady) Clifford, Virginia grew up in Quincy, MA. She graduated from Mount St Joseph Academy in Brighton, MA and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Regis College. She married Robert B. Mohr of New Orleans, LA in 1958 and they moved to Scituate, MA, where they spent their entire married life and raised four children. After her husband passed away, Virginia moved to Plymouth to be closer to two of her sons.
Virginia was employed as a legal secretary during different points in her life, working for the firms Malloy and Sullivan, Ohrenberger and Wojcik, and the Town of Scituate Zoning Board of Appeals. While she enjoyed her legal work, Virginia’s first love was music. She began studying piano in third grade and switched to singing while in college. Mohr studied voice with Dorothy Richards at the New England Conservatory and Mary Reilly at the South Shore Conservatory. Other teachers included: Luigi Vena, the soloist at the funeral of President John F. Kennedy; Maestro Franco Russo; and Pamela Wolfe.
Early in her singing career Virginia enjoyed performing in local musical productions. The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore, both by Gilbert and Sullivan, were her favorite. In her later years she starred in the Cohasset Dramatic Club’s productions of The Sound of Music and Alice in Wonderland. She belonged to several choral groups during her life including the Choral Art Society and the Broad Cove Chorale. Over the years, Virginia presented concerts for church groups, women’s clubs, and library groups among others. Her concerts that made the most impact, however, were the ones given at various nursing homes and retirement communities throughout the South Shore. She always brought big smiles to the faces of so many of the residents! Her concerts featured varied musical selections from operas, oratorios, and Broadway musicals, as well as sacred music, Irish music, patriotic music, and when appropriate, holiday music. For more than 25 years, Virginia was the soloist for the Town of Scituate’s Memorial Day Exercises.
Virginia was a wonderful mother with a strong faith which helped her through some difficult times. During her last days, she was often seen holding her rosary beads in her hands. She was a long-time member of St. Mary of the Nativity Parish in Scituate where she served in various roles including lector, cantor, religious education teacher, member of the parish council, choir member, and soloist. Her performance of “O Holy Night” at many Christmas Eve masses was always very moving. Virginia was also a valuable member of the First Trinitarian Congregational Church choir for several years.
Later in life, in addition to singing, Virginia took up organ playing and even installed an organ in her home! She also took up painting, creating many beautiful watercolors. Virginia also enjoyed watching sports, particularly the Red Sox and golf tournaments, but her favorite was watching Notre Dame football. She even owned a pen that played the fight song…pushing the clicker every time Notre Dame scored a touchdown! Virginia also enjoyed hearing about the activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, both in music and in sports.
Virginia is survived by her four loving children: Robert and his wife Cheryl of Plymouth, MA; Cliff and his wife Betsy of Falmouth, ME; John and his wife Christine of Plymouth, MA and daughter Maryalice and her husband George of Jamaica Plain, MA. She also leaves her nine grandchildren: Ryan, Scott, Charlie, Carrie, Patrick, Heather, Hayden, Daniel, and Aidan; and her eight great-grandchildren Morgan, Kaylen, Kayden, Cullen, Linden, Arthur, Hope and Jaxson. She is also survived by her cousins Mary Jane Brazet, Margaret Admirand, Jack Clifford, James Grady and families, members of the Barry and McKillop families, as well as sisters-in-law Gaile Schorr and Betty Mohr and families. Virginia was pre-deceased by her parents and her husband of 60 years, Robert B. Mohr.
Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Virginia’s life during visiting hours on Monday, April 13, 2026 from 8:30 am-10:30 am in McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 160 South Main St. (across from St. Anthony Church), Cohasset, MA. 02025 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate Harbor, MA. 02066.
