Hollis
October 14, 1932 – October 26, 2025
Walter B. Hollis, 93, of Scituate MA gently passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on October 26th, 2025, not one hundred yards from where he was born on October 14,1932. He had been in hospice care for three weeks following a brief illness.
Born in Scituate, He was the son of Wilson T. Hollis and Edith B. (Andrews) Hollis and shared his formative years with his five siblings on the family property in Scituate Center that his great-grandfather had purchased in 1860. During his youth, he worked for various farms in the area while also greatly helping his father doing chores while his older brother was deployed to the pacific theatre during WW2.
At age 15, Walter was employed by Boston Sand and Gravel in Greenbush as a truck driver and yard laborer. He also worked briefly with Chase's Wild Animal Farm in the Egypt section of town. In his late teens, he worked for The Welch Company in Scituate harbor, holding down numerous responsibilities, including delivering coal and working in the lumber yard. In January of 1953, he received his induction notice weeks after meeting the love of his life and future bride Jane Barnes. After twenty- two months in the US Army with combat service in Korea, he came home and married Jane. He then worked various jobs until settling in as a delivery driver for Anderson Fuel, where he worked for 36 years, while raising his family, retiring in 1997.
He was a Master Mason and member of the Satuit and Konohassett Masonic Lodges for twenty-eight years, the Superintendent of the Fairview Cemetery for over thirty years, and a devoted member of both the Scituate Harbor Methodist Church and the Union Mission Chapel.
He was the husband of Jane V. (Barnes) Hollis, with whom he looked forward to their 71st wedding anniversary on November 7th.
He leaves behind his three sons, Scott Hollis of Scituate, Charles Hollis and his wife Susan (Stoneburner) of Hingham, Craig Hollis, and his wife Ellen (Falvey) of Scituate, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to the Graveside service at the Fairview Cemetery in Scituate on Saturday, November 1st at 11AM.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at the Harbor Methodist Church, 55 First Parish Rd. at 11am on Saturday, November 8th. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Norwell VNA and Hospice ( www.nvna.org ) as they were an immense comfort for the entire family during Walter's last months.
