Charles F. Field

On May 30, Charles F. Field, 94, of Scituate was reunited with his wife of 68 years, Florita, who predeceased him in 2019. Charlie leaves his children Amy Chessia (Scituate) and spouse Eric Stamp; son, Charles Jr. and wife Susan (also of Scituate); and "fourth daughter" Kate Jackson (Marion, MA). He was predeceased by daughters Susan (McGowan) and Janet (Field-Pickering).

In addition, Charlie leaves his beloved grandchildren: Sara, Morgan, Taylor, Andrew, Whitney, Benjamin, Rory, Spenser, Sarah and Claire. He treasured his eight great-grandchildren Marckenrho, Grace, Leonardo, Ashley, Harper, Ellie, Nova and Brayden.

Charlie was known as “Bud” Field growing up in the Savin Hill neighborhood of Dorchester (MA), playing “half-ball” and trumpet in the St. Williams Parish band. His family summered in Weymouth. He graduated from Boston Latin School and Boston College. In World War II, he served in the US Navy on Saipan. In letters sent home, Charlie often doodled drawings of daily life, always featuring his trumpet case next to his footlocker in the barracks.  A warehouseman in the Navy, he was featured on the Tuesday evening broadcast of “Cool Breeze,” a weekly jazz program on Radio Saipan. Later, he followed his love for music becoming a card-carrying member of the musicians’ union, playing gigs throughout the area with such Boston-based luminaries as drummer Ken Hadley and trumpeter, David Burdett. He studied music composition at the Berklee College of Music. He shared his love for music with his children (often chided by schoolmates for knowing the words to every popular Broadway musical) and grandchildren, driving them around town in his car listening to Big Band music, lovingly remembered by them as “the Jazz Mobile.” Music filled his homes wherever he might be.

Charlie returned from the Pacific, married Florence Rita Perini in 1951, and became an independent insurance agent for Penn Mutual and the Aetna. He and Florita built a home in New London, New Hampshire in 1969 to support their love of skiing and fishing. He tied his own flies for trout and land-locked salmon, spending many vacations with his wife, son, and granddaughter Sara in the Rangeley region of northwest Maine. Charlie and Florita moved to Boca Grande, Florida, joining the ranks of what his good late friend Bob Peirce called “P.I.P.’s,” previously important people. He was a former president of Hatherly Country Club and member of the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club. In Florida, he was a member of the Lemon Bay Golf Club in Englewood and Boca Grande Men’s Club, and was the perennial Master of Ceremonies at the Boca Grande Ladies’ Club Dog Show. He was not afraid to “have the mike.”

The family wishes to thank all of his many friends who have reached out with prayers and condolences. Additionally, we would like to thank the management and staff of Cardigan Nursing and Rehabilitation in Scituate. If Charlie were writing this, he would remind everyone that “Life is not a dress rehearsal. Live it up!”

A Mass of Remembrance will be held on Tuesday, June 8 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony's Church in Cohasset, MA. Reception to follow.
