Christopher Weeks Obituary

Christopher Weeks passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 27, 2024 at his home in Philadelphia. He was an educated and well-read citizen, husband, and father who loved reading, classical music, history, anthropology, learning new languages, and traveling to locations off the beaten path.  He is survived by his beloved wife Judith, six children, and ten grandchildren, with an eleventh on the way.

Chris was born in Scituate, Massachusetts and attended Phillips Academy Andover, where he was later inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor as a member of the 1948 Varsity Swim Team that broke five records and won the first New England Interscholastic Meet. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University in 1952, where he played trombone in the marching band and was a member of the varsity swim team.

Upon graduation, Chris served in the Navy for two years. After earning a master’s degree at the University of Michigan, he joined the International Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Budget (now the Office of Management and Budget) in Washington, D.C. as a senior examiner where he oversaw economic aid to various countries in Africa and the Middle East.  In 1962, he was selected to attend Harvard University on a government-sponsored fellowship at what today is the Kennedy School of Government and earned a second master’s degree.

In 1963 Chris returned to the Kennedy administration and took on various senior roles, including rewriting the Foreign Aid Act and drafting aspects of President Kennedy’s recently formed Peace Corps. In 1964, incoming President Johnson established The War on Poverty as his seminal presidential program, and Chris was recruited to join the Task Force that shaped it.  He played a key role in developing the Job Corps and served as its first deputy director.

Chris then moved to Philadelphia, where he spent more than 25 years in real estate and development in the public and private sector, including a stint as City Development Coordinator and senior roles at Bank of America, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and Amtrak.

Chris is survived by his wife, Judith, and his children and grandchildren: Jennifer (Matt) and daughters Claire and Nina; Daniel; Cynthia (Neal) and children William, Alexandra, Gordon, and Kate; Christina (Steve) and sons Grey and Gunnar; Sam (Lili); and Danielle (Mark) and daughter Adira; and by his former wives, Ann Reagan Weeks, Anita Hills Weeks, and Sylvia Kay Weeks.
