David Huston Pottenger, II, a resident of Cohasset for nearly 60 years, passed away peacefully at home on March 19, 2022. Born in 1928 and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dave was the son of William and Florence Pottenger. An Honors graduate of Amherst College in 1951, Dave attended University of Michigan Law School before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1952. He later received his MBA from Miami University in Ohio.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps, Dave returned to Ann Arbor where he met and subsequently married Nancy Cutting. Dave and Nancy were married for sixty-three years before her passing in 2017. In 1965 they moved to Cohasset where they raised their family.
Dave is survived by his daughter Susan, also of Cohasset; son Andrew and wife Elaine of Stamford, CT; and son David and wife Sara, of Durham, NC. Dave also leaves behind his much-beloved grandchildren, Nick and Luke of New York, NY, Tatum (m. Amos) of Davidson, NC, and Megan of Durham, NC.
Despite being introduced to the wonders of technology later in life, Dave was an enthusiastic convert. He was proud of being a long-tenured member of Cohasset’s Old Goats and loved the Zoom meetings which enabled his participation in later times. And his 2021 New Year’s Eve was happily spent viewing his granddaughter’s wedding via You Tube.
Dave entered the paper business in 1954 and spent the entirety of his career in that industry, concluding it in 1987 as National Marketing Manager for Strathmore Papers and Artist Materials. Strathmore was a source of much creative fulfillment and countless friends across the country. Despite his love for the industry, however, he found a great deal of enjoyment in telling people that he had been retired for longer than he worked.
Traveling as much as he did during his working years, Dave enjoyed his retirement. He was an active participant in his church, St. Stephens Episcopal Church, serving on the Vestry several times. He was a longtime driver for various volunteer ride organizations in Cohasset. Most importantly to him, he was an enthusiastic member of Harvard’s Learning in Retirement program for more than 25 years, where he took and taught a wide array of classes.
Finally, as was the case with Nancy, this wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the love Dave had, throughout his life, for his Springer Spaniels: Rusty, Brandy, Rusty II, Mandy, Cassie and Pepper. They brought him unceasing joy.
A memorial service will be held at St Stephens Episcopal Church in Cohasset on May 6, 2022 at 11 am. A reception will follow at the Church’s Walton Rogers Hall.
