Dene H. (Hudgins) White

Dene Hudgins White, age 93, of Scituate, passed away on October 11, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 71 years, James Roy White and her sister Ernestine Rhodes and her husband O.H. Rhodes.  She is survived by her two daughters Jennifer Smollett and her husband Peter; Cynthia Vogel and her husband Robert (all of Scituate) and her son David White and his partner Christine Comperchio of Ipswich.  She leaves six grandchildren, Andrew Smollett, Julie Chandler and her husband, Scot, Robert Vogel and his wife Sarah, James White, Jeffrey White and Natalie White and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Smollett, Kaelen Chandler and Elizabeth Chandler. 

Born and raised in Sycamore, Georgia, Dene attended Georgia College for Women before working as a secretary in Warner Robbins, Georgia. It was there she met the love of her life and future husband Jim, who was stationed at the local army base. They married in 1946 and took up residence in Jim’s native Massachusetts.  Dene was a mother and homemaker extraordinaire, honing her cooking and sewing talents in the early years of her marriage. She delighted in entertaining and flower arranging and ultimately found her true passion in world travel. Her exposure to the people and cultures of the world gave her an education she otherwise would not have had, and she loved to share her travel adventures with friends and family. A keen observer of human nature, her stories were often warm, funny, and poignant. She was an accomplished real estate broker, working for Dwyer and Mullin for 20 years, earning the Top Broker of the Year award on several occasions. A long time member of the Gourmet Guild, Scituate Garden Club, Scituate Harbor Yacht Club, Hatherly Country Club and the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, she remained active in these organizations, contributing with her trademark enthusiasm and boundless energy.

Dene was a devoted wife, loving mother and trusted friend to all.  Her countless kind and selfless acts of help, support, compassion and counsel will be her legacy.  She will be dearly missed and always remembered.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church in Scituate on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:00A.M.
