Frederick Henry St. Ours Jr.
Frederick “Fred” St. Ours Jr., a longtime resident of Norwell, passed away suddenly at his home in Pembroke on Nov. 4 of natural causes at age 56. An avid outdoorsman, Fred had a passion for the North River and during the summer months could frequently be found holding court with his large group of friends at “The Spit” or the family cottage on Wood Island in Scituate. Fred was a skilled carpenter and had recently completed the renovation of his 1750 farmhouse in Norwell. He was an accomplished multi-instrument musician, landscape painter, naturalist, gardener, expert chicken wrangler and fisherman. He was a local expert on wild mushrooms, leading foraging walks and lectures on the subject.
Fred attended Norwell schools where he was a brilliant student. He graduated from Northeastern University with a B.S. in biology, with studies in Marine Science in Jamaica and Washington State. He earned an M.S. from UMass Boston with a concentration in entomology. During his graduate studies, Fred travelled to the rain forests of Costa Rica where he worked with wildlife researchers studying the habits of dragonflies and damselflies.
Fred is the son of Frederick H. St. Ours Sr. of Norwell and was preceded in death by his mother, Sara Saintours of Norwell and Hingham. He leaves behind loving sisters, Susan St. Ours of Weymouth, Sharon St. Ours-MacLellan of Norwell, a brother-in-law, Andrew MacLellan, nieces Audrey MacLellan and Rowan MacLellan, uncles Richard St. Ours, Blaise Stephanus and Don Thornton, aunts, cousins and many, many friends who will miss him dearly.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, from 1-4pm at The Tinker’s Son in Norwell Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North and South Rivers Watershed Association, PO Box 43, Norwell MA 02061 https://www.nsrwa.org/give/, and by planting common milkweed and other native wildflowers to protect the monarch butterflies and other native pollinators https://www.americanmeadows.com/category/wildflower-seeds.
