John Dwyer Obituary

John Michael Dwyer passed away peacefully in Cohasset on October 21, 2018, surrounded by his loving wife and children at the age of 72.  He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Loretta (Retta) Murphy Dwyer, daughter Keeley Dwyer Snider and her husband, Barney, of Chevy Chase, MD, daughter Kerry Dwyer Matchak and her husband, Victor, of Cohasset and son, John Michael Dwyer, Jr. and his wife, Melissa, of North Weymouth. Loving Grandad to granddaughters Katherine Murphy Snider, Maeve Kemmer Snider and Camryn Loretta Matchak.

John, better known as “Jack” growing up, also leaves a sister, Janice Dwyer Todd of Cohasset, James Dwyer of Virginia, Brian Dwyer of Ohio and many loved nephews, nieces and cousins.

Born in Melrose, MA to the late Frederick Duncan Dwyer and Rose Elizabeth Dwyer (Keefe). His family later moved to Illinois where he graduated from Deerfield High School. John is a graduate of Roosevelt University in Chicago and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago. John proudly served in the National Guard.

John thrived as an Investment Banker for Lehman Brothers in Chicago and on Wall Street, working on the cutting edge of the Mortgage Backed Securities industry.  He later fulfilled his childhood dream moving his family to Cohasset, where he founded Alliance Funding, Inc.

John was a man of faith, a devout parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church in Cohasset.  He helped strengthen the faith of others, leading the altar server program for over 20 years, serving as a CCD teacher & Eucharistic Minister, and creating the adult altar server program. John also enjoyed being a Boy Scout Troop leader for boys with special needs.

For John, above all was family. John’s love for his wife, children and grandchildren was immeasurable. He easily welled up in tears when speaking about his love for his family.  John’s and Retta’s marriage was inspirational to many, teaching those around them that there is no greater gift than true love.

John had a natural way of bringing people together and formed many lifelong friendships.  He loved entertaining and hosted several epic parties over the years.  A big-hearted man, he treated his children’s friends as his own. John was a lifelong athlete, playing hockey weekly into his 60s. He enjoyed coaching his son’s hockey teams and all of the friendships he made along the way. He and Retta enjoyed many nights of laughs with The Cohasset Gourmet Club.

The Dwyer family will always have love and appreciation for the amazing staff at Cardigan Nursing Home in Scituate for their compassion and care.

John encouraged everyone to live life to the fullest and appreciate all of God’s wonderful gifts.  We hope everyone reading this will do the same as we celebrate his life. “Party on, ok?”
