Obituary

John L. Mello, a lifelong resident of Cohasset, passed away on Monday, January 23 at the age of 98.  John was predeceased by his loving wife, Diane (Litchfield) Mello. John was born in Cohasset to the late Antonio and Maria Laura Mello. John is survived by his daughters Roberta (Bobbi) Taylor-LaChimia and her husband Frank Jr. of Plymouth, Elizabeth (Betsy) Adams and her husband Richard of Pembroke and Barbara Piepenbrink and her husband Tom of Brant Rock. John also leaves behind 3 cherished granddaughters, Katherine Suddard and her husband Benjamin, Caroline (Callie) Adams, and Taylor Piepenbrink. John also leaves behind his precious great-granddaughter, Morgan Elizabeth Suddard.

John is survived by his sisters Eileen M. Tyeryar and Elizabeth M. Longo.  He was predeceased by his daughter Debra Mello, his sisters Angelina M. Garrett, Mary M. Grassie, Ida M. Fortier, and brothers Augustine Mello and Francis Mello.

John was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving during WWII. John was a Coxswain on the destroyer USS Gansevoort (DD-608). In December of 1944, the Gansevoort survived an attack by kamikaze.  Following honorable discharge, John became a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Post Office, serving in the town of Cohasset for 40 years. A past Commander of both the American Legion George H. Mealy Post 118 Cohasset and VFW Post 3169 Scituate, he was a 60+ year member of both wartime veterans service organizations and leaves a legacy of stewardship to both.

 

A Funeral Mass for John will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Parish, 129 South Main Street in Cohasset, on Friday, February 3rd, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.
