John Dow Muncey of Cohasset, passed away on July 25, 2023 after a period of failing health. John was born in Everett on September 3, 1933 to his loving parents Eleanor Muncey (Salvi) and Francis N. Muncey. He later moved to Cohasset and attended Cohasset High School, graduating with the Class of 52’. Upon graduation, he entered into the United States Air Force and was enrolled in the Aircraft Mechanic school at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas. Upon his graduation he was awarded the rating of Airplane and Engine Mechanic, and furthered his education with advanced trainings. One of John’s greatest memories was riding in a B52 bomber, where at 50,000 feet he recalls seeing the curvature of the earth. After his faithful service to our country in the Air Force, John went to work for Northeast Airlines as an Aircraft Mechanic.
John was Chairman of the Cohasset Housing Authority for over twenty years. He also served as President of the Bassing Beach Tenants Association for many years. One of his proudest times, was serving as Cohasset Harbormaster after the passing of his good friend, Moose Winters.
John was an extremely generous and kind man. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone that needed his help. His generosity and love always extended beyond anyone’s reach. John was straightforward and honest, consistently telling it like it was. He was the ultimate jokester and had a fantastic sense of humor. John was a firm believer in everything having a purpose or repurpose and was well known to “save” a few things. If you needed it, he had it. Some may say, he was hoarder, but he would say, he was a smart collector of all treasures. He will forever be remembered as one of the best.
John is pre-deceased by his son Richard D. “Chip” Muncey (2022), and is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary K. Muncey (Bacigalupo) of Cohasset, his son Francis N. Muncey of Abington, and his daughter Elizabeth C. Mannion and her partner Eric Young of Holbrook. He was the loving grandfather (Pap) to Liam and Ciaran Mannion, whom he loved more than anything. John leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews as well as other family members.
John was deeply devoted to his family and enjoyed each and every gathering. Some of his happiest times were at large family events. He loved the ocean and spending time on his boat, and is undoubtedly out there on the horizon now smiling back at each of us.
Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, July 30, 2023 from 3-7pm at the McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home-1 Summer Street, Cohasset, MA 02025.
