Joseph Noble Obituary

Joseph Noble passed away peacefully on January 28, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Eleanor McCarthy Noble, his siblings Charles Noble, Eleanor Hanks, and Margaret Noble Sullivan. He is survived by his sister Mary Duggan of Scituate, brother John Noble of Dunedin Fl and Scituate, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces, and great grandnephews. Joe was raised in Scituate where his love of the water was born. He spent his childhood on the ocean and as a teenager harvested Irish moss with his brother. He graduated from Scituate High School in 1953 and joined the United States Coast Guard. He was stationed on Nantucket and often spoke of his love of the island and its lighthouses. After his service in the Coast Guard, he worked for the A&P grocery store. One day, he came home and told his father that he wanted to go to college. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Bridgewater State College and embarked on a career in education – 30 years of which were spent in Norwell Public Schools. He could also be found tending bar at the Cliff Hotel, Bell Buoy, Hatherly Country Club,  and The Barnside. He retired as the Assistant Principal at Norwell Junior High School,  where he had a positive impact on the lives of countless students. While he was educating students in Norwell , he found a way to combine his love of education with his love of skiing. He spent many years helping to launch and eventually became the Assistant Director of the Loon Mountain Disabled Skiers Program. In the early 1980s, he became the Scituate Assistant Harbormaster and Shellfish/Lobster Constable, and he spent the next 25 years patrolling Scituate Harbor and the North River. He knew the North River like the back of his hand and could navigate it blindfolded. No one could tell a story like Joe, and he loved to share his experiences with everyone. As his nephew Pete promised him, we can best remember him by continuing to share his stories.
