Marie J. (Favaloro) Lehane, age 92, of Scituate, passed away peacefully on December
27, 2012. Beloved wife of the late James J. Lehane, Sr. and devoted mother of Marina
T. Carvell of Quincy, James J. Lehane and wife Susan of East Sandwich, David A.
Lehane and wife Donna of Scituate, and Michael J. Lehane of East Sandwich. She
was the loving sister of the late Rose Gowell of Weston. Marie is also survived by 6
grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild as well as three
nieces.
Marie was born in Brooklyn, NY, moving to Boston (Jamaica Plain) with her parents as
a young child. She attended elementary school and high school there. She married her
sweetheart, Jim, in December of 1941. After the war, they raised their four children in the
house her father built, close to Arnold Arboretum and Jamaica Pond. While she was able
to stay home with her children in those early years, she also had opportunity to work in
retail sales and to pose as an artist's model. She loved the city and all its pleasures but her
life was soon to change.
In 1964 she and her family moved year round to Scituate, MA where they had enjoyed a
summer home for some time. For the next almost 50 years she became firmly entrenched
in her new community, making many friends along the way, being very active in her
church and gladly becoming a "townie". She was perhaps best known as a reading
teacher in the elementary schools, and many of her former students will never forget her
two favorite directives: "Sound it out!" and "Look it up!" Certainly her own children will
not. She was a strong and determined lady of a special generation never to repeat. She
was well on her way to reading every book ever written and nothing save death could
quench her insatiable intellectual curiosity. She leaves her family, friends and former
students this favorite challenge – "To whom much is given, much is expected".
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 11 am in St. Mary of the
Nativity Church, 1 Kent St., Scituate, MA. 02066. Visiting hours omitted. Interment will
be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie's name may be made to The Cardigan
Nursing Home, Scituate MA. For an online guestbook, please visit www.mcnamara-
