Obituary

Cohasset, MA  -  Marie T. McCarthy (née Allen) died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.  She was the daughter of Joseph P. Allen and Mary T. Allen (née Landers) of Boston.  Born in Boston, Marie also resided in Cohasset, Dorchester and West Roxbury, MA, Mt. Vernon, NY and McLean, VA.  She is survived by her two daughters, Rebecca M. McCarthy and Nora T. McCarthy of Belmont, her brother Joseph P. Allen and her niece Jackie Reynolds of Chelmsford, her sister-in-law Diane McCarthy and her wife Colleen McCarthy of Bourne, and her devoted pet Mollie Harmony.  She was predeceased by her husband and the love of her life, Terence, in 2020 after 54 years of marriage, parenting, love, laughter, and companionship.

Throughout her life Marie believed deeply in the democratic political process and was committed to freedom, opportunity and justice for all.  During the 1960’s she was inspired by both Dr. King’s dream of equality and President Kennedy’s call to public service, actively volunteering in many local and national political campaigns and civil rights organizations in Massachusetts, New York, and Washington D.C.  One project she remembered most poignantly was addressing ‘Thank You’ bereavement notes on behalf of Jacqueline Kennedy for the death of President John F. Kennedy.  During these turbulent years, she met Terry McCarthy and they fell in love, married, moved to New York, and had two daughters.

Career advancements took the young family back to Boston, and they eventually settled in Cohasset. In 1982 Marie  accepted a position in the Foreign Exchange Trading Room at the Bank of New England in Boston.  Twenty years, and several acquisitions and buyouts later, Marie ended her career at the Bank of America as a Vice President in Treasury Compliance.  She joined her beloved husband Terry in retirement and they resumed their international adventures to Australia, Italy, France, and Germany.  While loving to travel, they began to cherish the quiet times at home more, sitting on the screen porch rocking chairs, bird watching, admiring the gardens they tended, reminiscing and listening to the BSO Tanglewood Sunday evening concerts.

Marie loved Sandy Beach, Cohasset Harbor, Rockport, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC, raising dahlias, walks with Terry and Emma and Mollie, The Women with Big Sticks Rowing Club, and Red Sox Spring Training trips.  Upon reflection, she stated that of all the wonderful travels she’s enjoyed and the challenging jobs and delightful colleagues she’s known, Christmas mornings at Old Pasture and backyard Summertime BBQs with family and friends – with Terry on the grill of course – were the best of times.  She will join her love and our father Terry in Cohasset Central Cemetery.

Remembrances in her name may be made to St. Anthony’s Shrine 100 Arch Street, Boston MA or to the World Central Kitchen.

Arrangements are private.
