William Kelley Obituary

William Edward Kelley         July 21, 1929 – August 3 ,2019

Born to William and Katherine (nee Gately), Bill was a dedicated family man from the beginning.  After his father passed away at an early age, he helped take care of his mother and brother Roy and started working as a paper boy in his hometown of Waltham, MA.  Bill’s long and distinguished banking career took root at the Waltham National Bank as a messenger. He soon moved up to the Newton National Bank where he worked his way up from Teller to Bank Operations.  It was there that he met the woman who would become the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Angelina Marini.  He interrupted his career to enlist in the Marines in 1951, went to Korea and earned the Purple Heart when he was wounded.  Upon his return home, Bill and Angie reconnected and were married in 1954.  Three children later, he started at Framingham National Bank and became Vice President of Lending in 1959, the same year he earned his undergraduate degree from Boston University after attending night school.   He moved his family, now with five children, to Cohasset, MA as he joined the Quincy Trust Company in 1965 as Executive Vice President.  Within a year, he became President of the bank, which later became the Hancock Bank and Trust Company.  Along the way and before his sixth child was born, he received his MBA from Boston College, also while attending nights.  While working in Quincy, Bill volunteered his time and financial expertise to a number of community organizations.  Bill was on the Board of Directors of the South Shore YMCA for 38 years and was inducted into their Hall of Fame award in 2000.  He was also on the Board of Directors of Braintree St. Coletta Day School, South Shore Chamber of Commerce, Bay State Community Services and served as Chairman of the Board of the Massachusetts Bankers Association.  After his retirement in 1988, Bill became very active volunteering for Meals on Wheels, Cohasset Fish, American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery, Cohasset Public Library and St Anthony Catholic Church, where he served on the Finance Committee, lectured and sang in the Choir with his Irish tenor voice.  From his early days in Cohasset, Bill developed a love of sailing and served as Commodore of the Cohasset Sailing Club.  He loved sailing on his Lightening Class sailboat Shannon, especially the glass of Chardonnay after the sail.  Upon achieving old age, Bill became a member of Cohasset’s Old Goats Club. He is survived by his wife, Angelina, and his six children:  Kathleen Cimina (David) of Newtown Square, PA; Susan Carter of Hull, MA; William Kelley (Julia) of Scituate, MA; Christine Viola (Anthony) of Hingham, MA; Maureen McCarthy of Cohasset, MA; and Victoria Grimes (William) of Cohasset, MA.  He was a proud “Papa” to 15 grandchildren: Kelley Carabasi (Erik), Kimberley McKee (Louis) and Kevin Cimina; Carlie Whoriskey (Pete) and Shelley Carter; Jennifer Gurnon (Matt) and Sara Lussier (Kevin); Michael, Madeline and Gabrielle Viola; Isabel and Kate McCarthy; Benjamin, Matthew and Angelina Grimes, and 5 great grandchildren: Luke, Taylor and Matthew Whoriskey, Haley Gurnon and James Lussier.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 6th from 4-8pm at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home, 1 Summer Street, Cohasset.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, August 7th at 10:00 am  at St. Anthony Church, 10 Summer Street, Cohasset.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Norwell VNA or the Semper Fi Fund.
