W. Wayne Higgins

W. Wayne Higgins age 86, of Scituate, passed away Nov. 14, 2016 at the Pat Roche Hospice Home. Born at the Cohasset Hospital, he was a graduate of Scituate High School and attended Wentworth Institute. Wayne was employed for 40 years as a supervisor in the radar antenna business starting with D.S. Kennedy Co. in Cohasset, ASI in Hingham and Manchester, NH, and H & W Industries in Cohasset.  He traveled to many countries installing these antennas.

 

Wayne was a former Past Master of the Satuit Lodge, a member of the Old Colony Sportsman Club rifle team where he was a  team competitor for years, a member of the Scituate Historical Society. He had a boat building company, Avocet in Hingham Shipyard and then returned to the antenna business in Cohasset with H & W Industries. Wayne could build anything; if you needed any kind of a tool or boat part, he could make it.

 

Wayne enjoyed gardening, raising honey bees, raising beagles and his favorite dog, Fred.  He enjoyed spending time teaching his grandson, Brian how to sail, fish and tie knots.  Wayne loved working in his Garden, where he had 3 apple trees and one tree had 5 different types of apples that he grafted onto it.

 

Wayne served in the Navy and then the U.S. Coast Guard.  In 1952 he was on duty with the USCG off of Chatham when they received a distress call that 2 ships were breaking up, the Pendleton and the Mercer. Mr. Higgins fired a line across the bow of the Mercer with a raft attached to save the men. Mr. Higgins received a Letter of Commendation for his actions from the USCG.

 

Wayne was an avid sailor. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.  In 2008, he took his wife, Sandra to South Africa on a hunting trip and a Safari.  He enjoyed traveling to Europe and also hunting in Montana with his late friend Barry Getto.  Wayne also enjoyed playing the piano and the organ.

 

Mr. Higgins was the son of the late Milton F. and Mildred (Beede) Higgins of Cohasset.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra (O’Neil) Coyle Higgins; two daughters, Lee Mitchell of Halifax   and Kim Brennan of Plymouth, 3 grandchildren and stepfather to Sarah Lannon and Alfred Coyle and Papa to Brian Lannon and James Coyle.  He was the brother of Glenn Higgins of Bokeelia, FL and uncle to David Higgins of Florida and Susan Lientz, of Florida.  Also, survived by his former wife, Joan (Agnew) Haskins of Plymouth.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at the 2nd Congregational Church in Cohasset, 43 Highland Ave. next to the Cohasset Town Hall on Nov. 23 at 11 AM.  A gathering will take place after the service. A private burial will be held at Woodside Cemetery, Cohasset at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the NVNA and Hospice, 120 Longwater Dr., Norwell, MA 02061 and MGH Alzheimer, Boston, MA.
