I played baseball for Mr. Garrigan in 1990 and, in that short time, I realized how special of a person he was. He was very encouraging of me and I was very touched by that after the fact, when I realized just how great he had been to me. Whenever I have seen him, kindness just emanates from him. He had terrific wisdom and knew how to make a person feel cared about. I am very grateful to him for how he treated me and I am very saddened by his passing. My deepest condolences to his loves ones. R.I.P., Coach, and thank you for everything.

As a friend and colleague he was always in your corner.

I would just like to offer my sincere condolences to the entire family of Coach John Garrigan. I played catcher for the man I will always call Coach from 1992-1995. I had an amazing time playing baseball with my teammates but what I remember most about the experiences during that time is the relationship and friendship I made and enjoyed for many years with my friend Coach Garrigan. High school is a time in a young man's life when at times he may not know which way is up. The last place I would have ever thought I'd receive counsel was from this (which I thought at the time) old crotchety man. Coach had a God given gift to transcend age barriers and relate to me on a level the made perfect sense. He used baseball as the common medium to mold boys into young men and instill values in us that remain long after the baseball gloves were put away. He used to say/sing " we have to do the things we have to do". We all thought he was crazy but it was actually the very basis for how a team could be successful. Take care of the little things and do your job and the rest usually fell in place. What I admired most about Coach was his ability to help his players realize the very best that was inside them. Wether you were the starting ace pitcher or the 3rd base coach, he treated you the same and expected the same time and effort to whatever role you played. Looking back on his style, I looked at this as brilliance because he was able to harness every single team members abilities and on a personal level showed each kid that he had a crucial role and Coach needed his all if the team was going to succeed. Coach Garrigan was much older then me in fact I used "old man" as a term of endearment, but we were good friends . We always had baseball which meant that he was also teaching me life's lessons. I shed a tear today and I miss my friend, but it's never hard to think about us putting a lineup together and I'm right back there with him. Those types of lessons he taught and the sacrifices he made of himself to dedicate so much of his life to a bunch of kids that half of the time were a pain in his butt, were nothing less then his own state of grace. It was truly a labor of love for him and I'll never truly be able to thank him for the positive impact he has had on my life. I'd like to say thank you to his family for sharing him with us, he was truly a gifted teacher, Coach, and friend. I will miss Coach but you will never be far from my heart.
