Welcome to the memorial page for

Michael G. Hughes

September 26, 2015

Michael G. Hughes, M.D., of Cohasset, formerly of Hingham, touched the world around him.  His warm dry wit was exceeded only by his generosity to others, not only within his profession but towards his family, friends and community.   Michael never wavered from his commitment to the health and well-being of others.  Whether he was on the golf course, opening a great bottle of wine or stitching-up a neighbor on his kitchen counter he tackled it all with same zest for life. Michael left us all too early, fighting a dignified battle against cancer which ended on Saturday September 26, 2015.

Michael was born in Hingham and was a graduate of Hingham High School, Class of 1980.  He graduated magna cum laude from the College of Holy Cross and received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  He later received his MBA from Boston University. He lived in Cohasset with his family: his wife Nina and his beautiful children Samantha and Max. He is survived by his Mother Peggy, his sister Susan and his brothers Gregory and Timothy. His father Gerard preceded him in death.

Mike was a board-certified emergency room physician who worked in this role for over 20 years at Mt. Auburn, South Shore and Cape Cod Hospitals. He more recently opened Health Express Urgent Care Centers, with his partner Dr. Chris Whelan, to serve the needs of residents of the South Shore.

Mike also had a distinguished military career having attended UMass Medical School on a Navy scholarship. He rose to the rank of Lt. Commander while serving as an Undersea Medical Officer. Mike was stationed at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico from 1991 to 1993 as a member of the Naval Special Warfare Unit  (Seal Team) Four.  He also served at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and was Medical Dive Officer at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut.

Mike was well known for his charitable and volunteer works.  Upon his graduation from Holy Cross he served for a year as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Portland, Oregon. He later became involved with Bridge Over Troubled Waters, a charity serving troubled and runaway teens. Mike worked many evenings on their medical van treating teens in need and later became a member of their Board of Directors, ultimately rising to Chair their Board for over five years.

Mike was also very involved with the Cohasset Triathlon, serving as the annual events MD. He also donated many hours speaking at local schools and area organizations on the benefits of education and his medical experiences.

Mike’s other passions were running, golf and crew. To this end he completed two Boston Marathons, one New York Marathon and countless 10K’s and trail runs. He also rowed crew while at Holy Cross and as a member of the Cohasset Maritime Institute. He participated in several Head of the Charles as well as local Head of the Weir competitions. Mike was a member of Cohasset Country Club and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Mike will be sorely missed by all who knew him but we will find comfort in knowing the tremendous impact he had on all he touched.

We love you and miss you Mike!

A wake will be held at the Parish of St. Anthony in the Church, 129 South Main St.,  Cohasset, MA. 02025 on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 from 3pm-8pm. A Mass to celebrate Mike’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 also at St. Anthony’s Church at 10 am. Interment Private.

The family requests that any donations in lieu of flowers be made to Bridge Over Troubled Waters, 47 West St. Boston, MA 02111, 617-423-9575 or www.bridgeotw.org.
