Peter Anthony Maich, 67, of Cohasset, MA, and Kiawah Island, SC, passed away in Boston on December 9th, after an inspirational eighteen-month battle with leukemia.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Mary-Ellen “Mimi” Maich. He is survived by his son, William, of Boston, MA; his mother, Marie, of South Bend, IN; his brother, Paul, of Granger, IN; and his sister, Patricia, of Middletown, CT; as well as his sister-in-law, Jessica. Peter had three nieces, Emily Killilea (Christopher), Katherine Maich Sacco (Nicolás), and Hilary Robertson (Bryan). He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Joseph Massimino, his wife, Jody, and two nephews, Jason and Joseph Massimino (Cindy).
In addition to his family, a group of loving and devoted friends faithfully stood by Peter throughout his illness.
Peter was born on November 22, 1947 in South Norwalk, Connecticut, to William and Marie Maich. He graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School in Fairfield, CT, in 1965 and went on to earn a degree in marketing from the University of Notre Dame in 1969. After Notre Dame, Peter earned an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1971.
Following his father’s lifelong career in retail, Peter began working at Abraham & Strauss in New York and later held several management positions at Jordan Marsh throughout New England before joining TJ Maxx. He became Senior Executive Vice President and Group President of the TJX companies from 1985-2006. During that time, Peter was the President of TJ Maxx and the Group President of many of the company’s operating divisions.
Golf was an important part of Peter’s life, dating back to his childhood summers caddying with his brother, Paul, at Shorehaven Golf Club in Norwalk, CT. He enjoyed many golf trips to Ireland and Scotland with The Wild Colonial Boys and was an active member of the Wollaston Golf Club and Cohasset Country Club. Peter played in several championships, including the Fallon Cup, which he and his brother, Paul, won in 1995 against great odds. That same year, he joined the board of directors of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund and has served as a chairman for their golf banquets since 1997.
Peter was the recipient of the 2005 Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award and was recently awarded the Ouimet Honorary Alumnus Award for his years of service and scholarship funding, including the creation of an endowed scholarship, the Billy Maich Award, named after his late father.
Peter and Mary-Ellen generously supported the efforts of many nonprofit organizations, created university scholarships, and donated to several medical research institutes, including the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. In 1995, the Cardinal Cushing Centers named Peter “Man of the Year” for his outstanding fundraising support of their schools for people with disabilities.
For their competence and compassion in their care of Peter, the family wishes to thank the staff of Massachusetts General Hospital, South Shore Hospital, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of both Mimi and Peter to the American Brain Tumor Association, the Ouimet Fund, or The Acute Myeloid Leukemia Foundation.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9 AM on Saturday, December 13th, at St. Anthony's Church, 10 Summer St, Cohasset with a reception to follow at Atlantica, 44 Border Street, Cohasset.
